Matthew Brown

Associate Conductor

 

BIOGRAPHY
 

Matthew Steven Brown began serving as the Assistant Conductor of the Canton Symphony Orchestra in July of 2007 and was named Associate Conductor in 2010.

Mr. Brown is the co-founder and artistic director of the International Conductors' Festival in Kiev, Ukraine. ICF is an annual summer destination for young conductors and provides them the opportunity to rehearse and perform extensively with a professional orchestra.

Before joining the CSO, he lived in Baltimore, MD where he was the music director and conductor of the Harbor Opera Company, a group devoted to the performance of modern American opera.

In addition to his CSO duties, Mr. Brown has served as an adjunct faculty member at American University in Washington DC.

Mr. Brown holds a masters degree in conducting from the Peabody Conservatory ('05), where he studied with Gustav Meier and Markand Thakar, and served as conductor for various ensembles.

Mr. Brown grew up in Texas, where he began his musical life as a guitarist in his teens. He earned a bachelor's degree in music history at Southwestern University ('02) in Georgetown, TX, where he also began his conducting studies with Lois Ferrari and Kenny Sheppard. He currently lives in Washington DC with his wife, Ann, and their son Henry.
