Auditions for Canton Youth Symphony Set
CANTON, OH-- Audition dates for the Canton Youth Symphony 2010-2011 season will be Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12. Auditions begin at 9:30am on September 11 for strings and percussion and at 1pm on September 12 for woodwinds and brass. Auditions will be held both days in the Arts in Stark Education Center, 1014 Cleveland Avenue, NW, Canton.
Current CYS members may schedule auditions beginning August 2 and new prospective members may schedule beginning August 16 by calling Irene Barker at the Canton Symphony Orchestra at 330-452-3434 ext. 610. All information regarding auditions is available at www.cantonsymphony.org/education.
Under the direction of Eric Benjamin, the Youth Symphony will be accepting auditions for all sections of the orchestra, including: violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, piano and harp.
The Canton Youth Symphony is primarily open to student musicians in junior and senior high schools in Stark County; however, students younger than this age range and/or residing in other counties are also welcome to audition. The audition consists of a prepared solo or orchestral excerpt, major scales up to four sharps and/or four flats, and sight-reading. Auditions are approximately ten minutes in duration and are unaccompanied.
The Canton Youth Symphony requires its members to participate in their school’s instrument ensemble program. This policy has been established to benefit both school and CYS programs, but mostly to benefit the students. School music programs are essential as they form the foundation of most of the students’ musical studies and continued participation in school ensembles reinforces and strengthens that foundation. At the same time, being a member of CYS gives the students an opportunity to expand their musical experiences by playing with musicians from other schools, performing under a different conductor, studying with professional Canton Symphony Orchestra musicians and playing a different repertoire of music.
The Canton Youth Symphony gives young musicians the opportunity to participate in an advanced orchestral ensemble striving to provide a professional atmosphere for music making. Orchestra members have regular opportunities to work with members of the Canton Symphony Orchestra in sectional work. The orchestra has also recently initiated new programs including chamber music ensembles and a Concerto Competition open to juniors and seniors. The orchestra plays a diverse mix of challenging
