Continuing our celebration of Gerhardt and Beethoven, we will honor them both by presenting the most celebrated melody by the most celebrated of symphonists: Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor and its beloved “Ode to Joy.” Inspired by Beethoven’s belief that humankind is ultimately good, it focuses on the grace and joy that humanity has to offer.
In addition, we will present Marvin Hamlisch’s (composer of A Chorus Line) Anatomy of Peace: Symphonic Suite. This piece was performed at the 50th anniversary of “D-Day” in 1994 at Omaha Beach which was broadcast internationally. This powerful depiction of Normandy’s invasion by the Allies is incredibly poignant and revered by members of the armed forces.
