Canton Youth Symphony
Celebrating 50 Years

Overview
The Canton Youth Symphony was founded in 1961 as a way to give young musicians
the opportunity to participate in an advanced orchestra that strives to provide a
professional atmosphere for music making and the highest artistic standards.
Membership in the Canton Youth Orchestra offers musicians:
-
Opportunity to play with students from a variety of area schools (23 schools from 16 different school districts were represented in the 2010-2011 season)
- Opportunity to perform a repertoire of challenging and varied orchestral music
- Opportunity to study with Canton Symphony Orchestra musicians through sectionals and to play a side-by-side concert with the Canton Symphony
- Opportunity for members who are juniors or seniors in high school to participate in a concerto competion adjudicated by Gerhardt Zimmermann, music director of the Canton Symphony Orchestra
A New Approach
In this golden anniversary year, the Canton Youth Symphony will provide a slightly differect musical experience than in its past. Led by conductor Eric Benjamin, CYS will begin the year as two separate ensembles - a string ensemble and a wind ensemble.
Each ensemble will rehearse separately and have focused instruction in technique, performance skills, musicality and sightreading. This focused approach will enable the orchestra members to perform at a high level when the two ensembles merge into one full orchestra later in the season.
Eligibility
Membership in the Canton Youth Symphony is by audition only. MORE INFO
The Canton Youth Symphony is primarily intended for students in high school and junior high. However, there is no minimum age requirement and talented younger musicians are encouraged to audition.
School Music Program Requirement
In support of school music programs, it is the policy of the Canton Youth Symphony that members are required to also participate in at least one school instrumental ensemble (if one is available). Extenuating circumstances will only be considered on a case by case basis and must be discussed with the Director of Education (330-452-3434 ext. 604).
