2018-2019 Principal Viola Auditions

announces the following vacancy beginning in the 2018-2019 season

PRINCIPAL VIOLA

(approx. 55 services per season)

along with possible unconducted

Ensemble services (String Quartet, etc.)

 

Qualifications for this position will include but not be limited to:  perform all solo viola orchestral passages and ensemble viola passages, bow all viola parts, set an example of the very best musicianship for the section and function in the manner consistent with professional musicians.

 

Auditions will be held Thursday, October 4, 2018 from 11:30 – 2:00pm at Umstattd Performing Arts Hall, 2323 17th St. NW, Canton, OH 44708.  Preliminary auditions will be held 11:30 – 1:00pm, with the final round beginning immediately after.

 

The current Master Agreement concerning wages is under negotiation, but the per service rate for the Principal Viola position last season was $129.99, plus 5% pension contributions (AFM-EPF).  Per service rate for the first daily Ensemble service (up to 1-hour period) was $85.00.  Some services require daytime availability.

 

Repertoire for the audition includes a solo of your choice plus the following excerpts:

Brahms                              Symphony No. 2 – mm. 17-26; mm. 114-134; mm. 302-318; mm. 350-374

Enesco                               Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 – No’s. 4-6 and 7-8

Kodaly                               Hary Janos Suite – Solo (beg. – Reh. No. 1)

Mendelssohn                     Midsummer Night’s Dream – Scherzo – m.17 – Reh. D

Mozart                              Symphony No. 35 – 4th mvmt, mm. 134-181

Shostakovich                    Symphony No. 5 – 1st mvmt. – Reh. No’s. 15 – 17

Strauss                               Don Juan – beg. – Reh. D

Don Quixote – Solos (Reh. No’s. 26 – 34)

Please bring your own music to the auditions – no excerpts will be available at the auditions.  Finalists might be asked to sight-read.
