Music Theory with Matthew
Join Assistant Conductor Matthew Jenkins Jaroszewicz on a six-session journey exploring how the music we know and love from the concert hall is constructed. We will begin with intervals - the smallest musical building blocks and the units from which all music is created. We continue with a discussion of melody and harmony - the beautiful tunes that pull at our heartstrings and the chords that create rich, sonorous accompaniments underneath them. We will finish with musical forms, especially Ternery, Rondo, and Sonata-Allegro - the large-scale structures around which composers organized their melodies and harmonies. If all of this sounds like a foreign language to you, you're in the right place! All will be explained in due course of time, and you will be able and encouraged to ask questions throughout each session. When all is said and done, we can't promise you'll be able to write the next groundbreaking dissertation on Music Theory, but we hope that what you learn from the course will enhance your listening experience when we eventually return to the concert hall.
