The instruments of the woodwind family are placed in the same family because they are all made out of wood or used to be made out of wood, and how they make sound. Woodwind musicians blow air, or “wind”, into their instrument to create sound. Bassoons, oboes, and clarinets use reeds to make sound on their instruments while the flute blows air across a hole in the instrument to make a sound.
